Topic: Wait Extinguish – Ped Lanterns – Red Man

One of the topics discussed at SNUG in Hamilton was the Wait Extinguish.
Should we be keeping the red man lit at all times (except during 'walk' time), or should we be continuing with the current practice of dropping a few seconds after the clearance time is finished?

Not a bad idea.

The issues we have customers complaining about is not quiet enough time on the green crossing phase and impatient turning traffic trying to blast through,

Re: Wait Extinguish – Ped Lanterns – Red Man

I’ve received 23 feedback of survey during the conference.

• 17 votes for Yes and nationwide approach. Call accept indicator is strongly commended by most people.
• 6 votes for No, the main concern is efficiency, a few comments saying people should be able to cross when is quiet rather than waiting.

Any thoughts?

One of the key challenges could be how to change pedestrians interpretation and habit.

Re: Wait Extinguish – Ped Lanterns – Red Man

The extinguish wait feature works well both as a call-accept feature and to legitimise pedestrian who just cross with the full green. If it was to change then strong evidence will need to be provided to justify it, since in Chch for example, it would require the upgrading of 350 signal controller personalities and the retrofitting of about 2,800 call-boxes to include the call-accept, not an insignificant cost! And does the call-accept for each ped require an individual core?
